FAQ

Are these units suitable for all boat types and any water conditions?

They are designed for use in 'racing' sliding seat rowing boats used in rowable water conditions. They can work in other situations but are likely to give less stable readings.

Can I use them when Coxing?

When coxing they will be mounted at 180 degrees to their normal orientation and will generally not work correctly.

Technical Specification

Size - 66mm tall, 58mm wide and 24mm thick (2.6" tall, 2.3" wide and 0.9" thick)

Weight - 70 grams (2.5 ounces)

Physical protection - Waterproof to 2m (6 ft) submersion and shock resistant.

Display - Stroke rates are displayed to ½ stroke accuracy from 17-55 and ActiveTime timings are in 1 second increments. The rating numbers on the display are 19mm tall.

Battery - A CR2032 battery is fitted. When replacing it a new battery compartment O-Ring seal is required and these are available free. Battery life is approximately 150 hours.

Software - The internal software is upgradeable by Active Tools so future enhancements can be added (at a nominal cost).

Parts supplied - Units are supplied with a silicone protective bumper, two alternative mounting brackets, full instructions and 2 spare battery compartment O-Ring seals.

Rowing Shoes

Adjustable Size Rowing Shoes

View the FAQ Download Instructions

FAQ

I need to replace some shoes in one of our club boats and want to fit Active Tools shoes. Will they be a direct replacement?

The shoes have standard Adidas fixing points which have been carefully researched to fit as many footplates as possible. However there are variations in fixing positions on conventional shoes so problems can still occur. The shoes are therefore supplied with a template that makes it easy to put new holes in the footplate in exactly the right places.

Alternatively we are happy to supply new Aluminium plates either with or without holes.

If a pair of Active Tools shoes ever needs replacing they are guaranteed to fit, as the fixings are precision moulded into the shoe bases.

Do the shoes come with heel ties?

Each pair of shoes comes with two sets of ties so that you have a spare set when the originals need replacing. These are high quality ties (rock climbing accessory cord) rather than 'shoe laces'. However heel ties often become frayed because the tie holes in the footplates have sharp edges so it is essential to check them every few weeks.

Are replacement parts available for the shoes?

The main straps are available as replacement parts as the Velcro inevitably degrades over a period of hard use. They come as a set with new Toes Straps as the webbing on these can also deteriorate over time and they are vital to the function of the shoe.

Technical Spec

Sizes:

The shoes adjust from UK size 9 to 14 (European size 42 to 48).

Materials

The internal chassis parts are moulded from high grade Acetal and glass filled Nylon polymers and the external parts are antibacterial EVA foam.

Guarantee:

The shoes come with a two-year 'reasonable use' guarantee while the straps are guaranteed for 12 months. In the unlikely event that any problems occur Active Tools reserve the right to fit replacement parts rather than replace the complete shoe.

Rigging Tools

Self Centering Span Gauge

View the FAQ Download Instructions

FAQ

How accurate is the self-centering span gauge?

The gauge can allow you to easily achieve an accuracy of 2mm or less.

What range of boat widths can the gauge accommodate?

From 350 to 750mm

Does the self-centering span gauge suit all boat types?

In general the gauge works best where a tape measure would have been used previously. If the oarlocks/swivels are much higher than the gunnels/saxboards, which is generally the case with sculling boats, the tool can't give accurate readings. However if the sculling boat has a wing rigger you can often measure to the centre of the pin underneath the rigger.

Do Active-Tools recommend span settings?

We do not recommend span settings but information is available on the Internet and the book ‘Nuts & Bolts Guide to Rigging’ covers the subject in some detail.

One-Set Pitch Gauge

View the FAQ Download Instructions

FAQ

How accurate is the one-set pitch gauge?

The gauge can allow you to easily achieve an accuracy of 0.25°.

Can the gauge be used to set lateral pitch?

Yes, providing the boat is well supported the gauge can be used to check the lateral pitches on the boat without repeated adjustment of the instrument.

What range of oarlock/swivel and blade pitches can the gauge accommodate?

From 0 to 7°.

What footstretcher angle range can the gauge accommodate?

From 38 to 45°.

Does the boat have to be horizontal to use the gauge?

No, but it does need to be within five degrees of horizontal (bow to stern) and in practice this only rules out
using the gauge when the boat is at an extreme angle.

Does the extension suit all blades?

The extension has a straight edge 255mm long and this allows most blade types to have their pitch angles
measured directly.

Do Active-Tools recommend pitch settings?

We do not recommend pitch settings but information is available on the Internet and the book ‘Nuts & Bolts Guide to Rigging’ covers the subject in some detail.

Laser Beam Height Gauge (discontinued)

View the FAQ Download Instructions

FAQ

How accurate is the laser beam height gauge?

The laser beam height gauge allows you to easily achieve an accuracy of 2mm or less.

What height range can the gauge accommodate?

From 130 to 200mm

Does the laser beam height gauge suit all boat types?

In its standard form the height tool can only be used where the top of the seat is below the edges of the gunnels/saxboards. With sculling boats this is sometimes not the case so ActiveTools offer optional spacers that can be fitted to solve this problem. Alternatively a slightly less accurate measurement can be taken by putting the height tool across the boat in front of the seat and using a tape measure to take a reading (see user guide).

The boat must not be more than 700mm wide across the inner edges of the gunnels/saxboards and the gunnels/saxboards must be even.

What powers the laser?

Two AAA/LR03/24A batteries are used. These should last at least two years and can then easily be replaced.

Do Active-Tools recommend height settings?

We do not recommend height settings but information is available on the Internet and the book ‘Nuts & Bolts Guide to Rigging’ covers the subject in some detail.
